AI glossary
A plain English decoder for the words that show up everywhere. Search it any time a term trips you up.
PromptWhat you type into the AI.+
A prompt is your instruction. The more context you give it - who you are, what you need, what format you want back - the better the answer.
ContextEverything the AI can see right now.+
Context is your current conversation, any files you uploaded and any saved instructions. When a chat gets very long the earliest parts can fall out of context, which is why the AI sometimes forgets what you said at the top.
Context windowHow much it can hold at once.+
The size limit on context. Think of it as the desk the AI is working at. When the desk is full, older papers slide off. Start a fresh chat when answers start drifting.
TokenA chunk of text, roughly three quarters of a word.+
AI tools measure length in tokens rather than words. You rarely need to think about it, except that very long documents cost more tokens and can hit limits.
HallucinationWhen the AI makes something up confidently.+
AI predicts likely text, so it can invent a fact, a source or a dose. Always verify anything medical, legal, financial or factual with a real source or a professional.
ModelThe specific brain you are talking to.+
ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini each offer several models. Newer or larger models are slower but think more carefully. Pick the default unless you have a reason not to.
ProjectA saved space with its own memory.+
Inside ChatGPT or Claude you can create a Project for one topic, add instructions and files, and keep all related chats together. See the Setting Up AI Projects guide.
Custom instructionsStanding rules for every chat.+
A one-time setting where you tell the AI who you are and how you want it to answer, so you stop retyping your family details.
MemoryFacts the AI saves about you between chats.+
Some tools remember details automatically. You can view, edit and delete these. Worth cleaning out when something is outdated, like an old age or a former routine.
TemperatureHow creative versus predictable the answers are.+
A behind the scenes dial. You rarely change it in consumer apps, but it explains why the same prompt can give different answers twice.
MultimodalIt can handle images and voice, not just text.+
Multimodal tools let you photograph a school form or the inside of your fridge and ask a question about it, or talk instead of typing.
Fine-tuningTraining a model on extra data.+
A developer level task. As a user you get the same benefit far more cheaply with Projects, custom instructions and a good prompt.
Training dataWhat the model learned from.+
The text and images used to build the model. Some tools may use your chats as training data unless you turn that off. See the Privacy and Safety guide.
Chain of thoughtAsking it to reason step by step.+
Adding "think it through step by step" often produces better answers on planning or math style questions.
