Weekly Meal
Planning Workflow

Use AI to inventory your kitchen, build a realistic weekly meal plan, and create your grocery list and dinner instructions without starting from scratch every week.

You can run this workflow in either of the two main AI assistants. Pick whichever you already use:

  • ChatGPT - free to start, and voice mode is great for the kitchen inventory step.
  • Claude - strong at organizing long lists and writing clean recipe instructions.

Copy each prompt below in order. Fill in the bracketed details with your own family, then paste it into your assistant.

  1. 01

    Inventory what you already have

Go through your pantry, fridge, and freezer and tell ChatGPT what you have. Voice mode works especially well for this because you can walk around your kitchen and call things out as you see them.

I'm going through my pantry, fridge, and freezer. I'm going to tell you everything I currently have. Keep a running inventory for me so we can use it to meal plan this week.

When you're finished, send the next prompt to organize it:

Organize everything I just gave you into Pantry, Fridge, and Freezer so I can quickly see what I already have.

  2. 02

    Build the first meal plan

Tell ChatGPT which meals you need planned, which days you cook, and any known plans or preferences. Let it prioritize ingredients you already own, but don't limit yourself to only those foods.

Based on what I already have, help me plan dinners for this week. I can buy additional groceries, but prioritize using what I already own. I also need [number] breakfast options and lunches for [days]. We like [preferences/family favorites]. We don't want [anything you recently ate or don't like]. I already know I want to make [specific meal] on [day].

  3. 03

Edit the plan until it actually fits your week

Don't accept the first meal plan just because ChatGPT made one. Change individual days without rebuilding everything. You can simply say things like:

We had tacos last week, so replace Tuesday with something else.

I probably won't cook Sunday. Move the plan so it starts Monday.

Keep Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Leave Wednesday and Saturday open.

Move the fried rice to Monday lunch instead.

Friday breakfast should be breakfast burritos.

You don't need a special prompt here. Treat the meal plan like something you're editing together.

  4. 04

Decide what should be prepped ahead

Look for breakfasts, lunches, or ingredients you can make once and use throughout the week.

Looking at this meal plan, what should I prep ahead so breakfasts and lunches are easy during the week? Keep it practical - I don't want to spend hours meal prepping.

You can also add specific ideas:

Let's premake breakfast burritos and bacon Gouda breakfast sandwiches for the fridge/freezer.

  5. 05

Turn the final plan into a weekly chart

Once you're happy with the meals, have ChatGPT make a clean version you can print or keep on your phone.

Make my final meal plan into a printable spreadsheet/table. Put the days of the week across the top. Put Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner down the left side, with each meal underneath the correct day.

  6. 06

    Pull your saved recipes

If you maintain a recipe database, give ChatGPT access to it or provide the link and tell it to use your saved recipes instead of choosing random versions online.

Here is my recipe database: [LINK]. Check it for any meals in this week's plan that I already have saved. Use my saved recipe when one exists instead of substituting another recipe.

If a family recipe isn't written down anywhere, just dictate it:

Here is how I make the ribs: [describe ingredients, temperatures, timing, and steps]. Use this as my rib recipe.

  7. 07

Create the grocery list + dinner instructions

Now ChatGPT can compare three things: what you already own + the final meal plan + the actual recipes. That gives you one final place to see what you're eating, what you already have, what you need to buy, and how to make each meal.

Now create my grocery list for the week based on the final meal plan and the recipes we're using. Compare everything against my pantry/fridge/freezer inventory so I don't buy things I already have. Then give me a separate "Already Have" list. Finally, create an ingredients list and simple cooking instructions for each dinner I'm making this week.

The following week, you don't necessarily need to inventory the entire kitchen again. You can tell your assistant what you used up, what you bought, and anything new in the freezer or pantry, then repeat the planning process from there.
